New Fathers research programme launched by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities

Scads fathers of children with information disabilities are not included in decisions affecting their child and are sidelined, according to the Foundation for the treatment of People with Learning Disabilities. To examine this further, the consideration has launched Recognising Fathers, a new research project to perceive the real and distressing issues faced by dads.

The into, to last for 12 months, will learn from fathers:

* The problems they have experienced using services and receiving labourers

* Their needs and wishes in the matter of father palsy-walsy bolster

* The ways in which they have, or have not, been adept to contribute to progenitors life and the development of their babe

* The effects of having a newborn with a learning disability upon a father’s relationship with his partner

To help in the research, the Foundation wants to be told from support services and organisations that can demonstrate examples of good technic, when working with fathers.

Recognising Fathers hopes to come out practical approaches and influence policy to support fathers and make them intuit more empowered. Practical information for fathers, and a strategy report for professionals, at one’s desire be elbow in July 2006.

Hazel Morgan, Co-Director of the Grounds for People with Learning Disabilities, says: “We separate that support for families raising a child with a learning disability is very much geared towards the mother. Often appointments with professionals are made in the halfway point of the working day and fathers can put one’s finger on this difficult and often feel excluded from discussions and decisions concerning their child. During the Recognising Fathers obligation we wish to work to find ways to ensure fathers feel supported, involved and empowered.”
